Sentang |
The timber is moderately hard and moderately heavy with a density of 560-770kg/m3 air dry. However sentang from the plantation may have lower density, e.g. 5 years old sentang (340-600kgm3) and 8 years old sentang (482-648kgm3). The timber is classified undder sharply differentiated from the heartwood, which is reddish brown. Texture is slightly coarse moderately strong (Strong group C). It is generally easy to work, taking a good finish. The boring properties are rated as good and planing and shaping as moderately good. Tests in serious degrade. The timber season farily rapidly, with only slight twisting and end-dry, while 38 mm boards take 4 months. Shringkage is very low with both radial and tangential shringkage averaging 0.5%. The timber is non-durable.
