Perah

The timber is very hard and very heavy with a density of 735-1,235 kg/m3 air dry. The timber is classified under Medium Hardwood in Malaysia. The timber is non-durable and is susceptible to termite and powder-post beetle attacks. Except for the core wood, the timber is easily treated with preservatives. Texture is moderately fine and even with straight or shallowly interlocked grain. The timber falls into Strength Group B) or SG3 except for some sap stain and insect attacks. 13 mm thick boards take 2.5 months to air dry, while 38 mm thick boards take 4 months. Shrinkage is high, with radial shrinkage averaging 2.4% and tangential shrinkage averaging 3.3%.
