Species

General Characteristics

Sapwood generally not differentiated from heartwood; wood yellow-brown; some species yellow-brown with an orange tinge or orange-brown in which case sapwood is differentiated; planed surface moderately lustrous; stripe figure common; texture coarse but even; grain interlocked; soft to cut across grain; air dry density on an average 496 kg/m³ (31 lb/ft³); not durable.

Structure

Growth rings absent.
Vessels with simple perforation; generally moderately large or even very large; few or very few in number; generally mostly solitary (but in some cases not so), the rest in radial pairs and multiples of 2 to 5 in a series and occasional clusters; evenly distributed without any arrangement; tyloses generally absent; deposits commonly present.
Wood parenchyma vasicentric, aliform or locally confluent or confluent. Rays medium-sized, visible to the
naked eye; not prominent on a radial surface.
Ripple marks absent.
Intercellular canals absent.

Burning splinter test: Splinterburns to ash.
Froth test; Negative.

Uses

The timber is suitable for light construction, strip flooring, core veneer in plywood manufacture, boxes, crates and wooden pallets.
