General Characteristics

Sapwood: White to pink, not always differntiated from heartwood. Heartwood: Pink or grey-brown with a pink tinge. Texture: Moderately fine and even; grain interlocked. Weight(Air-dry): Wood soft, light to moderately heavey, heavy ranging from 29-47 lb/cu.ft. with an average of 37 lb/cu ft. Durability: Not durable; attacked by sap-stain fungi and powder-post beetles.


Structure

Growth rings absent but occassionally tangential series of vessels may stimulate growth-ring boundaries. Vessels medium-sized; moderately numerous; majority solitary and occassionally radial paris; tyloses sparse and deposit absent. Wood Parenchyma sparse, occuring as very narrow borders to the vessels, hardly visible with a lens. Ray very fine but conspicuous on the radial surface due to contrast in colour with the fibre ground mass. Ripple marks absent but wavy horizontal storeys of darker-coloured rays may stimulate ripple-marks. Intercellular canals of the horizontal type present but only visible with a lens.

The timber is suitble for light construction, general planking, pallets, packing crates as well as core veneers for plywood manufacture.
