General Characteristics

Sapwood: Not sharply differentiated from darker coloured heartwood. Heartwood: Reddish brown. Texture: Moderately coarse but even; grain straight, spiral or wavy. Weight (Air-dry): Wood hard to very hard, moderately heavy to heavy ranging from 43-61 lb/cu.ft. with an average of 52lb/cu ft. Durability: Only moderately durable when used contact with the ground, the chief source of degrade comes from termite attacks. Reputed to be moderately resistant to marine borer attacks.


Structure

Growth rings absent. Vessel few, medium-sized to large; exclusively solitary with a strong tendency to be obliquely arranged, tyloses absent; deposits present. Wood Parenchyma abundant in narrow regularly and close spaced apotracheal band. Rays extremely fine, not visible to the naked eye. Not conspicuous on the radial surface. Ripple marks absent. Intercellular canals absent .

Uses

The timber is suitable for medium to heavy construction under cover, posts, beams, salt water piling and other marine construction. The timber is also suitable for parquet flooring and railway sleepers for secondary lines.
