General Characteristics

Sapwood: Usually not differentiated from the heartwood but some samples showed a yellow layer adjacent to the bark. Heartwood: Yellow brown, grey brown or red brown. Texture: Coarse and uneven due to the presence of large vessels and extremely broad rays.; grain straight, interlocked or slightly wavy. Weight (Air-dry): Wood moderately hard to very hard moderately heavy to heavy ranging from 38-65 lb/cu.ft. with an average of 53 lb/cu ft. Durability: Only moderately durable when used in exposed condition.


Structure

Growth rings demarcated by difference in fibre density but not always apparent. Vessels few to moderately numerous, medium sized to very large, mostly large; exclusively solitary and arranged in bunched groups (festoons); tyloses abundant in some species but scanty in others; deposits absent. Wood Parenchyma abundant in short tangential lines running across the rays, appering like rungs of a ladder. Rays of two distinct sizes, the large ones are extremely broad and high; the fine ones are only visible with a hand lens. Prominent silver figure on radial surface. Ripple marks absent. Intercellular canals absent.

Uses

The timber is suitable for heavy and medium construction if protected from termite attacks. If seasoned properly, the timber is suitable for interior finishing, panelling and parquets flooring. It is also suitable for furniture manufacture and decorative veneers.
