Major species: Garcinia hombroniana Pierre and G. negrolineata Planch. Other species: G. bresivirostis Scheff.; G. dulcis Kurz; G. gauduchaudii Planch. ; G. holtumii Ridl.; G. merguensis Wight; G. nervosa King; G. parvifolia Miq. and G. uniflora King.


General Characteristics

Sapwood: Majority not differentiated from the heartwood except those of G. hombroniana where the red brown sapwood is dinstinct from the dark red brown or deep red heartwood. Heartwood: Red or dark brown in G. malaccensis and G. hombroniana but light yellow in all other species. Texture: Moderately fine and even: grain straight. Weight (Air-dry): Wood very variable, rangin from moderately hard to very hard, with the majority hard. Density ranges from 43 lb/cu.ft. to 70 lb/cu ft. with an everage of 55 lb/cu ft. Durability: Not tested but indications show that Kandis is moderatley durable under cover away from termites.


Structure

Growth rings absent; Vessels moderately numerous to numerous, small to medium sized; solitary and in radial multiples of 2 to 5 with a tendecy towards tangential arrangement; tyloses rare and deposits sometimes very common. Wood Parenchyma abundant in narrow regularly spaced apotracheal bands. Rays very fine and not visible to the naked eye. inconspicuous on the radial surface. Ripple marks absent. Intercellular canals horizontal canals are seen only in two samples of G. negrolineata but not in the other material.


Other Features

Lather test sometimes positive .


Uses

The timber is used for pole and fence posts. The heavier species are suitable for semi permanent heavy construction like temporary bridge and extraction tramways.
