General Characteristics

Sapwood: Not differented from the heartwood. Heartwood: Light yellow brown. Texture: Moderately coarse and uneven; grain shallowly to deeply interlocked. Weight (Air-dry): Wood moderately hard to hard and moderately heavy ranging from 35-56 lb/cu.ft. with an average of 46 lb/cu ft. Durability: Only durable under exposed conditions.


Structure

Growth rings present, demarcated by layers of thick walled tissues without vessels usually followed by a layer of initial parenchyma. Vessels moderately few to numerous, medium size to moderately large; mostly solitary and in radial groups of 2 to 3, some species have radial groups of 7 ore more; tyloses sometimes abundant; deposits absent. Wood Parenchyma variable, sparse to abundant; paratracheal type usually aliform, locally confluent and the apotracheal type usually aliform, locally confluent and the apotracheal type at the beginning of a growth ring. Ripple marks absent. Intercellular canals of the traumatic type recorded in T. curtissii and T. phellocarpa.

Uses

The timber is suitable as a general planking timber,interior finishing, panelling, moulding and skirtings. It also suitable for furniture manufacture, plywood manufacture, flooring, packing boxes and pallets.
