General Characteristics Sapwood: Not different from hearwood. Heartwood: Pink brown to orange brown Texture: Coarse and even with fairly straight grains. Weight (Air-dry): Average 60 lb/cu.ft. Durability: Only moderately durable when used under exposed conditions.
Structure Growth rings absent. Vessels medium sized; large; mostly solitary with occasional radial pairs; widely spaced with suggestion of tangential arrangement; tyloses sparse or absent; white deposits in vessels common. Wood Parenchyma abundant; mainly short apotracheal bands which thick and bridging a few rays ata a time. Paratracheal type also present as narrow borders around the vessels. Rays of two distinct sizes, the fine rays are barely visible even with a hand lens; the broad rays are distinct and produce a conspifuous silver figure on the radial surface. Ripple marks absent. Intercellular canals absent .

Uses The timber with its broad rays and oak-like figure is suitable for interior finishing, panelling, fancy furniture, sliced veneers and possibly for parquet flooring. The timber is also suitable for heavy and medium construction under cover, fence posts, walking sticks and stool handles.
