Major species: Barringtonia pendula (Grill) Kurz; B. scortechinii King.


General Characteristics

Sapwood: Not distinguished from the sapwood in the samples examined. Heartwood: Light yellow brown. Texture: Moderately fine and even; grain straight. Weight (Air-dry): Wood soft to moderately hard; light to moderately heavy ranging from 30-45 lb/cu.ft. with an average of 38 lb/cu ft. Durability: Not durable, susceptible to sap-stain and powder-post beetle attacks.


Structure

Growth rings present but of variable distinctness; demarcated by either zones of thicker walled fibres or faint layers of apotracheal parenchyma. Vessel medium-sized to moderately numerous; solitary and in radial groups of 2-4; tyloses and deposits absent. Wood Parenchyma moderately abundant; both paratracheal and apotracheal type present; paratracheal type appearing as narrow borders around vessels and the apotracheal type appearing as short tangential lines running from ray to ray. Ray moderately broad, and distinct to naked eye. Ripple marks absent. Intercellular canals absent.
