Major species: A mono-specific timber.


General Characteristics

Sapwood: Dark yellow brown or light red brown, moderately differentiated from darker coloured heartwood. Heartwood: Red brown to purple red brown. Texture: Fine and even; grain interlocked. Weight (Air-dry): Wood hard and heavy, ranging from 50-69 lb/cu.ft. with an average of 56 lb/cu ft. Durability: Moderately durable to durable under exposed condition.


Structure

Growth rings present and demarcated by layers to darker coloured tissue without vessels or parenchyma. Vessels numerous, medium sized; mostly in radial groups of 3 to 5, with some radial pairs and solitary, vessels; mostly open but occassionally filled with tyloses and yellow-white deposits; perforation plates scalariform. Wood Parenchyma visible only with a lens; apotracheal, in reticulate narow line running from ray to ray except in growth ring boundaries. Rays very fine, just visible with a lens; mot conspicuous on radial surface. Ripple marks absent. Intercellular canals not observed.

Uses

The timber is suitable for piling, posts, heavy and medium construction under cover, furniture manufacture, strip flooring, pallets,boxes and crates.
