Major species: A mono-specific timber.


General Characteristics

Sapwood: sharply differentiated from heartwood. Heartwood: Dark brown with a red tinge; streaked with alternately lighter and darker stripes. Texture: Moderately fine and even; grain straight or shallowly interlocked. Weight (Air-dry): Wood very hard and heavy ranging from 46-77 lb/cu.ft. with an average of 55 lb/cu ft. Durability: The timber is not durable under exposed condition.


Structure

Growth rings occasionally demarcated by lighter coloured layers in the heartwood. Vessels few to moderately numerous, medium sized; solitary and in radial multiples of 2, 3 or 4, mostly in radial groups; tyloses absent; yellow-white desposits present. Wood Parenchyma abundant in narrow, closely and regularly spaced bands. Rays very fine, not visible to the naked eye, not conspicuous on the radial surface. Ripple marks absent. Intercellular canals absent.


Other Features

Lather test produces a slight lather.


Uses

The timber is suitable for medium and heavy constructions indoors and when treated should be suitable for all heavy construction, railway sleepers, parquet flooring and fence posts.
