General Characteristics

Sapwood: Pale yellow brown or tlight pink brown; distinct from heartwood. Heartwood; Light red, orange red or red brown. Weight (Air-dry); Wood hard, heavy to heavy, ranging from 47-62 lb/cu. ft. with an everage of 55 lb/cu. ft. Durability: Not tested but would be fairly durable for interior use.


Structure

Growth rings not apparent. Vessel moderatly numerous to numerous, small to medium-sized; solitary and in radial multiples of up to 4, tyloses absent but white, yellow or dark coloured deposits present. Wood parenchyma moderately abundant to abundant, both paratracheal and apotracheal types present. Paratracheal type in aliform and confluent bands. Apotracheal type in narrow irregularly spaced terminal bands. Rays moderately fine to medium-sized, visible to the naked eye; not conspicuous on the radial surface. Ripple marks absent. Intercellular canals present.


Other Features

Lather test negative. Odour spicy odour present.


Uses

The timber should be suitable for furniture, flooring, cabinet, trunery, decative wall panelling, face-veneer for plywood. The heavier woods have also been used for general construction such as beams, joist, rafter, boat building, agriculture implements and tool handles.
