A mono-specific timber; Strombosia javanica Bl. (Dedali)


General Characteristics

Sapwood: Lighter shade than the heartwood but differentiated from it. Heartwood: Pale yellow to golden yellow when fresh but darkening on drying to a light orange brown colour . Texture: Fine and even; grain straight or interlocked. Weight (Air-dry): Wood moderately soft and moderately light, ranging from 36-45 lb/cu.ft. with an average of 40 lb/cu ft. Durability: Moderately durable under exposed conditions.


Structure

Growth rings absent. Vessels numerous, very small, not distinct with a x10 hand lens; solitary and in radial groups of 2 to more than 6; ususally open without tyloses or deposits; perforation plates scalariform but not visible with lens ; . Wood Parenchyma abundant, visible with a lens; aprotracheal, consisting of diffuse strands and narrow incomplete layers bridging rays. Rays very fine and not visible to the naked eye; not conspicuous on the radial surface. Ripple marks absent. Intercellular canals absent .


Other Features

Produces a slight lather .


Uses

The timber suitable for general utility purposes, medium construction under cover, interior finishing, packing cases, veneers and plywood. In Indonesia, it has been successfully used in the manufacture of bent-works like badminton rackets.
