General Characteristics

Sapwood: Light brown occasionally with a green tinge, and sharply defined from heartwood. Heartwood: Brown to dark red brown. Texture: Rather coarse and uneven; grain straight to interlocked. Weight (Air-dry): Wood moderately hard to hard and moderately heavy ranging from 42-56 lb/cu.ft. with an average of 46 lb/cu ft. Durability: Only moderately durable when used in contact with the ground. Very susceptible to attacks by insect like termites, powder-post beetles and ambrosia beetles.

Structure

Growth rings present in form of thin layers of thick walled fibres. Vessels a few to moderately numeorus, medium sized to large; exclusively solitary but arranged in bunched groups (festoons); tyloses abundant in some species; deposits absent. Wood Parenchyma abundant in narrow regularly spaced apotracheal bands. Rays very fine and not visible to the naked eye. inconspicuous on the radial surface. Ripple marks absent. Intercellular canals absent .
