General Characteristics

Sapwood: Cream white to light yellow brown, only moderately distinct from heartwood. Heartwood: Light red brown. Texture: Moderately fine to slightly cooarse and even: grain straight or shallowly interlocked. Weight (Airdry): Wood soft to moderately hard; light to moderately heavy, ranging from 24-44 lb/cu.ft. with and average of 36 lb/cu.ft. Durability: Not durable in contact with the ground but would be durable for interior uses


Structure

Growth rings not observed. Vessels moderately numerous to numerous; medium sized; solitary and in radial groups of 2 to 4; open, without tyloses or deposits. Wood Parenchyma abundant, but on visible to the naked eye, both apotracheal and paratracheal types present; the apotracheal type in short, narrow layers bridging rays; the paratracheal type in narrow borders to the vessels. Rays of two distinct sizes, the fine ones are not visible to the naked eye, while the broader rays are just visible without lens. Not conspicuous on the radial surface. Ripple marks present but indistinct, coused by the stroreying of parenchyma rather than rays. Intercellular canals absent.

The timber is suitable for temporary light construction, flooring, cladding, planking, joinery, cabinet making, interior finishing, panelling, mouldings, tool handles for non-impact purposes, furniture, joists and staircase (apron lining, baluster, balustrade, carriage, handrail, riser, stringer, sprandrel framing, tread, bullnose, round end and winder).
