Abstract:
The original
edition of this work was published by the International Labour
Office, Geneva,
under the title "Higher ideas for owners and managers of small and
medium-sized industrial enterprises. Action manual". This manual shows
how to take simple, effective low-cost actions which raise productivity while
improving conditions at the workplace. Owners and managers of small and
medium-sized (SMS) furniture mills will find useful ideas on key topics such
as the handling and storage of materials, work-station design, safe and
efficient machine operation, plant layout and efficient machine operation.
These ideas are based on the actual experience of hundreds of owners and
managers of SMS furniture mills who have participated in training programmes organised by the
Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM), the Malaysian Furniture Industry
Council (MFIC) and internationally by the
International Labour Organisation
(ILO). The emphasis is on practical, locally appropriate measures directly
related to productivity. Workers also benefit from the action stated in this
manual. Low productivity and poor quality of work often result from the same
difficulties and lack of organisation that make work hazardous and unpleasant. In those
furniture mills where management develops a long-term commitment to
improvements in productivity, the involvement of workers is part of the
strategy for motivation and change. (101 PP. )
