Voluntary
Carbon Offset Scheme (VCOS) project is a smart
partnership between government and the private sector to address climate
change. The scheme was established under the Ministry of Natural Resources and
Environment which allows the private sector to provide financial contribution
to support tree planting activities that will result in carbon sequestration. A
Technical Committee led by the Forest Research Institute Malaysia was tasked to
assess carbon stock in Pekan, Kedondong,
Nenasi and Resak (Tambahan) Forest Reserve in the South-East Pahang peat
swamp forest (PSF) covering an area of about 12,950
ha that has been selected for VCOS site. Results of
this study are useful as reference for other carbon stock studies in PSF areas. They can also be used as baseline information
for calculating incentives under a voluntary scheme of carbon.
