These are the day-to-day diaries of FW Foxworthy, Malaysia’s first Forest Research Officer, covering the period 1918 to 1925. They provides a unique account of what was then known as ‘British Malaya’, in the early part of the 20th century, through the eyes of a high ranking scientific officer in the British colonial service. Amazingly, Foxworthy was not British. He was an American with a PhD degree from Cornell University and a previous outstanding career in forestry in the American colony of Philippines. Foxwothy’s appoinment was the result of a deliberate search for the best person in the world to start forestry research in British Malaya.
