Balancing development with conservation is a perennial challenge and can only coalesce with compassion and intellect. By depicting three peatland communities in tree Malaysian states―Sarawak, Pahang and Johore―and providing an intimate insight into their way of life in this setting, this book raises the issue of livelihood and a human dimension which has barely been acknowledged in the current debate on peatlands, climate change and biodiversity. It also discusses efforts by the Malaysian government to protect the existing peat swamp forest and questions the possibility of a solution unless a more balanced approach and equitable solution be offered by both sides of the debate.
