Termites are a group of highly organised social insects that display altruistic behaviour. Their important roles in the rainforest remain underappreciated, given their destructive habits on trees, wooden structures in services, underground cables and other cellulose materials. However, only a handful are economically important pest species. This factsheet serves to address the misperception about termites and provide baseline information on the three groups of termites in Peninsular Malaysia.
