ABSTRACT
This article covers four lesser-known timbers, namely, meraga, merbau kera, merbau lalat and minyak berok. They may be small in size and with deformed stems but once they are harvested, they should be used to the fullest to ensure efficient use of the forest resources. Of the four lesser-known timbers, merbau kera and merbau lalat contain very attractive growth rings figures on the flat-sawn surface and as such, they are suitable for use in the production of decorative products. Minyak berok, which is white to creamy-white in colour, is an attractive timber for use in places where light-coloured timber is preferred, e.g. squash court and sport hall. This article provides both anatomical features and photomacrographs of the timbers described so as to help in the identification. Possible uses of the four lesser-known timbers are also included as a guide to their utilization.
